This month, we recognize both current and former members of our armed forces for their sacrifice and service to our country in every capacity. We celebrate the members, we celebrate their spouses, and we celebrate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Here are 3 small yet meaningful actions you can take to recognize and uplift members of our community all month long:
1. Support a veteran or spouse-owned small business
Whether you can monetarily support their business by purchasing goods and services, or opt for a cost free solution like engaging with their social media content. It truly makes a difference! Veteran and spouse owned businesses have so much talent and insight to offer our local communities.
Outside of connecting with your local business owners, another good place to start is by visiting the directory on VeteranOwnedBusiness.com or Spouse-ly.com
2. Reach out to a veteran
There are some incredible programs available to become a veteran’s pen pal! It is a small act of kindness and compassion that can make a big difference.
An incredible organization that offers a Veteran Pen Pal Program is itsamilitarylife.org. The Veteran Pen Pal Project connects veteran communities such as veteran centers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and VA hospitals with pen pals around the world.
Through this work, you may have the opportunity to provide a positive light to someone who feels isolated or forgotten.
Learn more about The Veteran Pen Pal Project by visiting their website.
3. Speak to your elected officials
Encourage your elected officials to recognize our military members, veterans, and their families this month! An easy way to find out who your representatives are is by visiting MyReps.datamade.us. There, you can filter by local, county, state, and federal.
It is as simple as sending a quick email, making a phone call, or even following them on Twitter and asking that they recognize the important part that military members, veterans, and their families play in our communities on a local and national scale!
Happy National Military Appreciation Month. If you have any affiliation to military life, we recognize you and support you.
